Murray Martin - Vice Chairman

The Shires, Castle Hill, Carlton on Trent. Newark. NG23 6NX

Born in the small village of Austerfield near Bawtry I am now, I guess, a Yorkshireman doing some ‘missionary’ work in Nottinghamshire! I moved to the Newark area (Thorpe Village) in 1999 before moving to Carlton on Trent in 2006. Since moving to the village I have tried to involve myself in village life joining the Village Hall Committee and working as a volunteer to support whatever is going on, be it litter picking or setting quizzes.

Hello. I have lived in Carlton on Trent for 24 years having previously lived in Cromwell for nearly 25 years. I worked in a Newark bank for many years. I am married to Peter, a retired farmer; we have 2 daughters. I became a Parish Councillor three years ago. I enjoy being part of the community, meeting people and trying to help where I can. I enjoy being an active member of the Village Hall fund raising team. I, along with a friend, organise a mixed craft group on two Tuesdays a month from 10am to 2pm. Although popular we would like more members.

I was born in Lancashire and raised in Northamptonshire.  I joined the Army as a Junior Soldier at 16 and retired at 55.  My career started as a young Royal Engineer, however, I spent most of my time as a member of The Royal Army Physical Training Corps.  My last appointment was as Lieutenant Colonel (Commanding Officer) of the Army School of Physical Training in Aldershot.  I served all over the world during my 38 adventurous years of service and would do it all again in a heart beat if given the chance.  My wife and I moved to Carlton-On-Trent just after my retirement.

I have lived in Carlton on Trent for 10 years. I am retired after working in hospitality for many years including running the Nags Head public house for 14 years in the 1970’s/80’s. I like cooking and enjoy the opportunity to do so for the monthly Lunch Club in the village hall along with other helpers. I hope to be able to be of support in future village activities.

On leaving school I joined the British South Africa Police (Rhodesia/Zimbabwe) where I served for ten years and attained the rank of Detective Inspector – Member-in-Charge Homicide and Law and Order as well as having been in the Drug and Fraud Squads. After retiring from the police I worked as a Security Advisor to a group of companies in Johannesburg and after this joined a Financial Services Group where I had a role as Consultant in Risk Management and consultancy assignments throughout Australasia, Asia, sub-Continent and North Americas. After several years the company transferred me to the City of London office where I stayed up until my retirement. My wife and I lived in Surrey prior to moving to CoT to be closer to family.
